City assigns Harrington to probe Harbor Department irregularities

City Manager Sam E. Vickers appoints Neal Harrington to lead an inquiry into Harbor Department buys and operations. Four Hurt by Blast Fire in Los Angeles Office Building

A spark from an electric switch ignited gas in a Los Angeles office building today, injuring at least four people and triggering a seven alarm fire. Kent Barley, 47, of National Lead Co division, was the most seriously hurt. Firefighters warned against smoking as they fought the blaze with seven companies and searched for gas leaks. Police said no fatalities were reported.

Widow Pays Off Mortgage With Tiny Life Insurance

In Denver a widow settled a $9000 mortgage on her home for $9.46 after her husband, who had applied for life insurance the previous Saturday, died the next day. Actuaries estimate odds of such a payout at over a million to one. George Smart, 31, a head file clerk for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, underwent four physical exams for the policy the day before his death.

British American troops restore order amid deadly demonstrations

In a violent flare across Rome and Italian cities, British and American forces moved into the trouble area. At least 60 people, mainly students, hospitalised with bullet wounds. Police injured by a hand grenade as crowds of about 10 000 clashed, with several police possibly dead. U S involvement marked the first time federal troops were called to quell the unrest amid tensions with British and American residents. Ambassador Clare Boothe Luce briefed Italian Premier Pel la before witnessing protesters seize a fire truck.

Judge imposes weekly jail time on conscientious objector

Federal judge J. Sam Perry sentenced Robert J. Hart, 22, a weight-lifting instructor, to 48 hours in jail each week for five years for failure to report for induction. Hart must surrender weekly to the marshal, cover $4 per 48 hours for board, and has 30 days to appeal. Perry noted Hart’s conscientious objector claim and allowed suspension of the five-year term to let him support his mother.

Atty Gen Brownell charged President Truman hid Harry Dexter White a Treasury aide in the government and promoted him despite FBI reports of espionage by White. One Happy Inmate Earns Extra Time in Court

James Earl, 37, of 626 Molino Ave., was given five additional days by Judge Charles D. Wallace after requesting more time to recover from intoxication charges. The jailer approved the extension and Earl expressed gratitude as the judge agreed to accommodate him.

Coerced Mail Protests From POWs At Panmunjom

Panmunjom reports say one British and 22 U S prisoners accused anti-UN intimidation via letters from home. They called for censorship to block strangers’ messages while a nine Korean and two officers joined a British and American spokesman group to present a protest to the Repatriation Commission led by Lt Gen Thimayya.

Near Freezing Tar Traps Man in Kansas Quarry

Otis Hull a 67 year old man was found stuck to tar in an abandoned quarry near Kansas City in near freezing temperatures. He was held by tar for several hours and removed with benzine soap and water. He suffered pneumonia and exposure but was reported in fair condition. He could not recall how he ended up in the tar.
