About 30 Red Guerillas overran a U S Army camp near Tongnae eight miles north of Pusan, killing five American soldiers and a Korean houseboy. Two Americans wounded, two escaped. The raid yielded two .30 caliber machineguns, 2000 rounds, seven rifles.
General James A. Van Fleet, commander of the U S Eighth Army, arrived in Pusan from Seoul and met with President Syngman Rhee over South Korea's declaration of martial law. Embassy officials attended. no official comment was given on the visit.
Connecticut Republicans signed all 22 national convention votes to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower today. The six New England states formed a solid bloc for his presidential nomination, boosting Eisenhower’s delegates to 981. Taft backers failed to salvage delegates. Renominated Sen. Robert A. Taft ally William A. Purtell contested Benton’s seat. Sadlak renominated. Eisenhower forces secured a unanimous delegation in district caucuses.
Paris May 27 The Big Three powers backed a six nation army pact with a declaration that a Communist attack on Berlin West Germany or any part of Free Europe would threaten their security. The pact unites France West Germany Italy Belgium the Netherlands and Luxembourg into a 4 000 000 man peacetime force. Gen Matthew B Ridgway arrived in Paris to command NATO forces.
The Senate rejected a move to cut another 1 billion dollars from President Truman's foreign aid plan, voting 33 to 27. Committees had already shaved 1 billion, and the House reduced funds to 6.163 billion. Senator Welker of Idaho led the amendment. Senator Dworjak spoke earlier. Averell Harriman faced criticism over political aims while urging full aid. Carlson signaled possible further cuts of 0.5 million from the 6.9 billion Senate total.

Robert W. Jones, 34, of 1389 Orange Ave, returned home after three Coast Guard searches for his 37 foot fishing boat Fireball off Santa Catalina Island. The craft sank near Howland's Cove while Jones was sailing to Avalon, with Jones later reporting he swam ashore and hiked. Further details and a full account were to be given to the Coast Guard.
Panmunjom May 27. The North Korean senior Red delegate Nam warned the masses of North Korean and Chinese soldiers could strike the 155 mile Allied defense line if Communist prisoners on Koje Island were slaughtered. UN officials labeled the threat as propaganda.
In Korea on May 27, reports from Compound 95 say about 5 Red leaders of the 6000 captives in the No. 1 UN prisoner of war camp expressed willingness to come to terms with Gen. Haydon L Boatner. They asked a meeting, but Boatner demanded they first meet certain conditions. Col. Maurice J Fitzgerald was authorized to confer with the Reds.
Gen. Matthew Ridgway returns to Europe in Paris to assume command of NATO fighting forces. He meets Eisenhower at Orly as 20 000 Paris police guard routes against suspected Communist demonstrations. Ridgway notes a multi nation defense can curb communism.
The AFL Sailors Union of the Pacific votes to strike against the Pacific Maritime Association, delaying vessels including the P T Sea Farer and the Hawaiian Rancher. Harbor pickets at Wilmington protest retroactive wage talks as West Coast ports report about 20 ships tied up. Vote tallies by city show strong local support for the action.
The U S Navy reports 24 South Korean sailors killed and 21 injured on May 21 in a collision between the South Korean frigate Apnok and the U S ammunition carrier Mount Baker in Korean waters. The Mount Baker had no injuries and minor damage, the Navy said, noting both ships were in formation in darkness when a course change signal was given.
Two sticks of dynamite blew a small hole in the roof of Walker Elementary College, a polling place in Jacksonville, in the Democratic primary. Police Capt. J D Edrington reported two more sticks found on the porch of David Hi Dwight, president of the Duval County Democratic Alliance, Dwight’s home nearby.
A 30 year old woman was found dead in an alley near her home in Los Angeles. Police say she was dragged to the scene and assaulted, with blood on the legs and clothing disarray. A purse with small items was found near a telephone pole about 50 feet away.
Weather bulletin notes low clouds along the coast tonight and tomorrow morning with sunny skies turning hazy after noon tomorrow. Expect a high near 70 degrees and light morning winds shifting to 12 to 18 mph from the west tomorrow afternoon.
Thirty girls were overcome by smoke when a smoke bomb exploded in Yavapai Hall basement on the University of Arizona campus. Shirley Bledsoe, from Oklahoma and with lung problems, stopped breathing but was revived. four treated at St Mary's, ten at Tucson Medical Center, and the rest at Arizona Infirmary. Three male students are held.
