Two Air Force B-45 jet bombers reportedly collided over U S Route 58 near Franklin Virginia. Four bodies were found in the burning wreckage as fire crews and Langley AFB medics responded and a crash investigation began.

West Germany joins peace pact with Western powers

In Bonn on May 26 the United States Britain and France signed a peace contract with Western Germany and welcomed ex enemies as partners in peace. The ceremony in Bundesratsaal featured Eden Schuman Acheson and Adenauer as they signed the pact to unite 48 million Germans west of the Iron Curtain while awaiting parliamentary ratification and the related European army treaty.

War captives arming inside Koje stockade

On Koje Island Korea May 26 a U N disclosed kangaroo courts run by Communist prisoners of war have sentenced and executed at least 115 captives. An American officer said the prisoners are arming themselves with home made weapons for battle. The morgue at Koje prison hospital lists 115 dead with evidence of executions.

Red Chinese Attack Repulsed by UN Forces in Korea

Seoul reports UN troops repulsed a two company Chinese assault on the western front within five hours. US Eighth Army says over 100 attackers killed or wounded in the combat, first massed Red assault in weeks. Allied air forces claim several MiG-15 losses and total air casualties over 1,400 with 306 MiGs destroyed.

Detroit May 26 truckers supplying 6000 independent markets went on strike against potato ceiling prices. More than 300 trucks blockaded the Detroit Union Produce Terminal as owners refused to buy from commission men. A lone bandit in a tattered gray hat robbed Central National Bank in Des Moines shortly before 10 a m today. He escaped through a side entrance with loot estimated around 15 000 dollars.

Mexican crash kills 26 and injures 27 supporters

In Chonomas Mexico a rare weather incident involving political backers of antigovernment presidential candidates overturned yesterday. Twenty six men died and twenty seven were injured in the wreck. It is the fifth fatality level road accident in Mexico this year with more than twenty dead.

Fires After Delaware Collision Sink Tanker and Barge

A tanker Michael and barge A Dodge collided in heavy rain on the Delaware River near Reedy Island sending both vessels up in flames. Two men are dead, six missing, one injured, with 39 survivors. The Michael drifted to the New Jersey shore beached on a starboard bow hole while the Dodge mostly submerged off Augustine Beach. Survivors include Sjar Tellefsen, 29, and missing captains John D. Elliott, 60, and John W. Elliott, 30, among others.

Adjournment Drive Begins Amid Conventions Countdown

Washington May 26 AP Democratic leaders said they aim to adjourn Congress before the national political conventions opening July 7. Senate Leader McFarland Arizona said a firm adjournment date cannot be forecast until after this week’s progress on pending legislation and noted a two week view. House Speaker Rayburn reported the House calendar is in good shape but declined to predict a date. They spoke with reporters at the White House after a Monday briefing with President Truman. Rayburn commented on foreign aid, saying he opposed cuts and that the President had praised a recent speech with no discussion of it.
