Prehistoric tusk key find spurs museum display plan
In the Mojave area near Bakersfield a large petrified tusk and several teeth were found by uranium hunter Mankins. Curators from the Geiger County Museum and the nearby head of the Smithsonian project examined the tusk with a Geiger counter and noted its brown aging after air exposure. The discovery accompanies other fossil remains as researchers explore the site for ancient elephant precursors.
