Adlai Seeks Drift-Free Policy and New Social Programs
Adlai Stevenson charged the Eisenhower era pursues a policy of drift while urging bold plans. He proposed a $50 million federal grant, matched by states, to curb teacher shortages and fund $400 million in school construction. He called for long-term, low-interest loans for private health plans and for social security to include disability insurance for those over 50 and higher old-age benefits. He warned automation and atomic power will reshape the economy and urged science to serve humanity. He argued for a sweeping peoples’ health program while challenging socialist critiques and tying costs to recent Truman-era spending.
