Ex Red Bares Teachers Cell in L A Area

A Glendale College professor told the House Un American Activities Committee that a Communist party cell of Los Angeles area public school teachers existed before 1937. He said the local union was influenced by Reds, later purged and rechartered, with few teachers from various schools involved. He named himself and Richard Byrd Lewis as Glendale College members. He noted the group spanned a scattered city area.

Quake Felt Over Parts of New York and Connecticut

A tremor measured around 3 51 am shook southwestern Connecticut and Westchester County. Centered about 23 miles northeast of New York City, the quake prompted reports of a terrific explosion. No damage was reported though Stamford and White Plains police lines received many calls about shaking buildings.

Armed robbery hits Paramount bakery driver cash pickup

A bandit crew blocked the rear alley exit at 15991 Paramount Blvd and held up bakery driver Mike Koury of Los Angeles, fleeing with 6700 dollars. The 45 caliber gunman, about 40, six feet tall, wore a brown hat jacket and jeans. Police described the getaway car as a green 1950s Oldsmobile with a stolen tag.

Marines Regain Western Front Hills Near Old Baldy

In Seoul reports of Marine counterattacks describe a fierce 10 hour hand to hand fight to recapture one of two western front hills near Old Baldy, the area earlier seized by Chinese forces. The action follows a heavy Red assault with MIG jets and Australian jets engaging near Bunker Hill and Shohung as U S line pilots report damaging a MIG near Chinnampa.

Transport Plane Ditches Off S F Crew Rescued

A California Eastern Airlines DC-4 en route to Honolulu ditched 300 miles west of San Francisco after engine trouble. Four aboard, three civilians Captain George Dijeau pilot Nicholas Perweiler copilot R H Hamilton navigator and one military courier were rescued by the Swedish destroyer Bataan and later transferred to the Shanks for return to San Francisco. The plane sank after remaining afloat for hours.

Wild Harbor Free-for-All Involving Teens Ends In Jail

A brawl on Anaheim Street near the Terminal Island Freeway left seven youths and four girls jailed and two hospitalized. Police say long pipe knives and fists were used in the melee that smashed windows and drew gunfire calls. several youths and girls, including Clyde Brooks and Lornita Smith, were arrested on assault with a deadly weapon charges. A loaded shotgun was found in a car but not used.

Free River Floods Hit New England and New York

Heavy rain and melting snow caused widespread floods across the northeast. Over 1000 people evacuated from Mexico Maine with one death reported. Connecticut River rose toward flood levels from New Hampshire to Hartford. Black River flooded areas in Lowville New York and Lyons Falls. More rain expected, while other regions saw generally fair weather with cooler eastern temperatures.

Skipper of Missouri Dies on His Bridge

Capt. Warner Edsall skipper of the battleship Missouri died of a heart attack Thursday on the ship’s bridge as it entered Sasebo Naval Base for rearming after duty off northwestern Korea. He would have been 49 next May 7. Command will pass to Capt. Robert Brodie Jr. of Chevy Chase Maryland.

Mexican landlord ordered wrecking crew to evict tenants

Carlos Solano faced charges after a wrecking crew toppled walls of a building while tenants were inside. Nine people were injured as the landlord allegedly acted to force tenants to move out.

Plane thief battles chases over coast before landing safely

A stolen four place Stinson aircraft piloted by Ronald Sperry, 32, from Inglewood, threatened to crash in a death message before flying between Gardena and San Diego for over four hours. Coast Guard jets and a sheriff's plane tracked him as Sperry finally landed at Lindbergh Field, where he was arrested. A friend urged him to avoid crashing into the Los Angeles area.

Jelke Jelke Meted 3 to 6 Years for Vice Conviction

New York AP report on Jelke, heir to a fortune, convicted of two counts of compulsory prostitution for living off earnings of call girls. He received concurrent three to six year prison terms. Earlier, he was sentenced to eight months in the workhouse for illegally possessing two guns found during his arrest last August. Judge Valente noted the unpleasant duty of sentencing but emphasized Jelke's rehabilitation prospects.

Trainmen Strike Called on Nickel Plate Route

The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen announced a 2300 member strike set for Friday morning against the Nickel Plate Road and its Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway lease. The lines cover 2192 miles across Ohio New York Pennsylvania Illinois and Indiana with about 17000 workers. Union leaders expect the walkout to proceed while other operating brotherhoods plan to honor picket lines.
