Marshall describing an aim to develop a nuclear fission bomb by spring 1945 equivalent to 500 tons of TNT. It noted attempts to perfect a trigger and the implosion concept, with the gun-type device and later implosion method facing technical hurdles before the first test at Alamogordo on July 16 1945 and the Hiroshima drop on August 6 1945.
