Ike Gives Hell Remarks Leaked From Secret Session
Eisenhower private remarks reveal a tougher stance than his public tone as he talks with Western GOP delegates and newsmen in Denver. He faults Taft as isolationist, expects to win the GOP nomination, doubts Dulles can draft a policy acceptable to both, opposes a permanent five star rank, and urges pump priming to lift the economy during hard times. Taft to Chicago talks today. MacArthur cleared for role. Kefauver planned Detroit talks as Oregon results show strong veep potential for Kefauver-Douglas.

Scant Chance for Congress Windup Seen
Washington June 18 AP congressional leaders pressed to speed action but many lawmakers saw little chance for final adjournment before the national party conventions. The Senate met early as committees planned night sessions. House Speaker Rayburn predicted a first week of July adjournment with Taft foreseeing a recess July 4 to Aug 4. Conventions begin in Chicago July 7 for Republicans and two weeks later for Democrats. Taft noted eight appropriation bills await action and reconciling differences will take time along with defense controls extensions and veterans benefits issues.
