The government barometer shows rising living costs with May 15 readings up two tenths of a percent to 189.2 as food and rent push the index near last January's peak. Rail workers will gain a 2 cent hourly wage boost July 1, with textiles, aircraft, and oil refining sectors also seeing increases. clothing and other items show mixed movement.
Senator Robert A. Taft will reply to Dwight D. Eisenhower tonight at 4 p.m. Long Beach time. The half hour program, billed as an Answer to Abilene, will be broadcast on CBS NBC and ABC from New York with NBC national reach. Taft will devote part of the time to the Belles for Bob and include segments for a veteran, a worker, and a housewife supporting his candidacy.
Hughes announced new engines and modifications for the 14 year old flying boat to replace original parts. In a field nine miles south, a boy sleeping in grain was killed when a truck, driven by his cousin, ran him over. The aircraft will be launched after shipment to Long Beach as tests begin, with several months needed for installation and checks.
Granville West Virginia residents menacing dust from a coal cleaning plant and mines led to closures affecting about 700 workers. Mayor Clinton Cairney held a meeting to calm the dust-obsessed wives, who eventually allowed the Arkwright Osage mines and the cleaning plant to reopen after promises to address dust dispersion.
In Norwalk on June 19 a 3 month old baby, Linda Su Chamblin, died from a skull fracture while in a crib. Police await coroner autopsy results. mother left infant with neighbor and returned to find it unconscious. A 4-year-old neighborhood girl reportedly entered the home but denied harming the baby.
In Chicago on June 19 a 19 year old, William Hinkle of Carbondale Illinois, boarded a taxi and claimed he had swallowed about 40 razor blades. He was taken to Cook County Hospital where fluoroscope confirmed the tale. Doctors planned X rays and a soft diet until the blades pass in about a week.
Washington reports reveal United States Lines arranged a luxury cruise aboard its 70 million dollar liner United States for Congressmen and high officials. Several lawmakers declined claiming ethical concerns while subsidies fuel the project. Comptroller Lindbergh Warren seeks to block the deal as investigations probe ship subsidies. Invitations reached well over twenty lawmakers, including appropriations and ship subsidy committee members.
President Truman said taxes should be increased rather than decreased, challenging Taft and Eisenhower. He noted no Democratic president would cut taxes, and he praised Harriman's District of Columbia primary win as a clear New Deal-Fair Deal triumph.
Washington June 15 Senator William F Knowland of California denied offers of the Republican nomination in exchange for California delegates. A GOP figure suggested Knowland could win the vice presidency regardless of the presidential winner. Knowland said no deal exists with Taft and that California delegates remain pledged to Governor Earl Warren until he releases them.
In Los Angeles on June 19 a municipal court dismissed charges against Andrew Medrano 36 for shooting a dog that bit his son. The judge noted many children suffer dog bites and dismissed the gun charge while upholding the animal cruelty count.
Mrs Marion L Manning 27 describes as auburn haired is mother to healthy quadruplets two boys and a girl born at 9 23 p m 10 13 p m and 11 46 p m all in incubators weighing 2 to 3 pounds each. Doctors say condition fair. Manning had been hospitalized since May 24 for a virus infection with husband John noting risk of prematurity.
President Truman said he is considering using the Taft Hartley Act in the steel dispute and doubts CIO steelworkers would obey a court order to return to work. He noted his decision will not be guided by Senate or House actions, as pressure grows for action after a 99 day strike.
DETROIT June 19 The entire auto industry may be blocked but soon after the first week in July Automotive News said today. With dwindling steel supplies the trade paper warned industry wide auto plant shutdowns are no longer a threat they appear a certainty in the near future. Even if the steel strike ended today few auto plants would avoid shutdowns or slowdowns late this month and early in July.
Fire raged out of control on the Brooklyn waterfront under the Manhattan Bridge. A roaring wind sent flames two hundred feet into the air and scattered sparks over a broad area of Brooklyn.
Nominators picked by Warren and Taft in California and Illinois. California Governor Edmund G. Brown announced Sen. Knowland and Sen. Richard Nixon would head a 70 member California delegation pledged to Warren at Chicago. In Illinois Sen. Dirksen will nominate Taft with David Ingalls noting strong support and 19 at large delegates likely for Taft.
Low clouds tonight and tomorrow morning give way to sunny mid day and afternoon. Little temperature change expected with a high near 76 degrees today.
United Nations forces repelled sporadic Communist assaults in east central Korea killing more than a quarter of the attacking battalion. Headquarters estimated about 200 Red soldiers killed as air supported Allied troops held their forward position southeast of Kumsong. Red guns were silent near the Allies western front for a second day. US Shooting Stars conducted eight air strikes against dug in Reds on the rocky ridge.
