Eisenhower proclaims aid for free world nuclear development

President Eisenhower urged the United States to aid free nations with nuclear materials money and know how to obtain atomic power and research reactors. He proposed that the US cover half the cost of reactors and urged Russia to join an international atomic pool, appealing to the Russian people rather than its leaders. The address at Penn State marked the centennial commencement with about 20 000 in Beaver Stadium amid rain and umbrellas.

L A Transit Strike Voted For Next Week

Los Angeles transit union members voted 93 percent to strike next week after rejecting the latest company wage offer. Federal conciliator Harry Malcom scheduled talks to begin Monday at 10 a.m. The workers seek a 21 cent per hour raise plus sick leave holidays a medical plan and other benefits. The company proposed a 3 cent raise now and 3 cent increases in December 1955 and June 1956.

In Chicago a CIO United Rubber Workers spokesman said a negotiated deal for about 23 000 workers across 10 Goodrich plants is likely before the strike deadline at midnight. A. L. Lewis voiced optimism from a Friday night session.

Fiollywood Woman 41 Dies in Front of Hotel

HOLLYWOOD AP A Hollywood woman Marjorie Frodsham 41 shot herself in front of a hotel as her daughter Merilyn Jean Krissman 24 watched after a family argument. Merilyn described the scene, saying her mother pulled a .25 caliber pistol from her purse and died from a heart shot. Police arrived as Merilyn struggled with officers until a physician gave a sedative.

iCar Falls Off Bridge Lands Upside Down in Pond

Dallas Texas. G. E. Alderson 38 a furniture salesman drove off a concrete bridge railing Friday fell 20 feet landed upside down in a pond. Five minutes later three unidentified men pulled him out. Wrecker crew worked two hours to remove the car and Alderson’s face was scratched.

Long Beach Truck Drivers Ratify New Wage Accord

The Local 689 teamsters ratified a contract raising wages by 10 cents an hour with phased increases over two years and a Saturday time and one half pay. A 5 cent hourly pension credit and three week vacations after three years are included, with retroactive raise for about 1,000 drivers from May 1.

Jobs and Business Up for First Four Months 1955

Los Angeles area employment rose from 2,118,000 to 2,195,700 in the first four months of 1955, a 3.7 percent gain. Manufacturing weekly earnings advanced to 384.78 dollars, a 26.4 percent rise. The report notes 4.5 fewer business failures than the prior year.

Los Angeles witnesses a concrete overpass collapse on the Santa Ana Freeway during paving. A beam pierced a car windshield injuring Lawrence A. Smuth 37 of Norwalk while truck driver Bob Gilbert 23 of Bell Gardens escaped injury. Deputies diverted traffic to Atlantic Blvd as cranes cleared debris and the incident caused a lengthy freeway snarl.

Bus Explosion Kills Dutch Children in Osnabrück

A sightseeing bus carrying 43 Dutch Children from Den Ham, Netherlands, caught fire and exploded in Osnabrück, killing 2 and injuring 21, with five in critical condition. Police say gasoline from spare cans in the rear likely caused the blast. the driver survived but collapsed.

Police report 30 to 40 killed and nearly 100 seriously hurt after two sports cars in the Le Mans 24 hour race collide near the grandstand. Prisoner Flees Jail Wearing a Towel in Santa Ana

A 21 year old Orange County jail inmate undergoing back treatment at Orange County Hospital escaped late Friday night wearing only a towel. Police launched an intense search for Marvin R. Ford of 2381 Rodeo Place Costa Mesa, a suspect in multiple Newport Beach burglary and attempted burglary cases. Roosevelt G. Wilkins, 22, of 2183 Rodeo Drive, is the other suspect.

Longshore Pay Raise Ends Chicago Strike

A brief earth tremor shook Bishop Resort area and a Chicago strike ended as dock workers and the dock company agreed to a two year contract retroactive to the start of the dispute. Officials estimated losses at about a week’s pay. The quake registered magnitude 4 on the Richter scale near the port area.

Signal Hill Crash Kills L B Man 35

A 35-year-old man, William Robert Mounce of 1434 Rose Ave, died from a skull fracture after a two-car crash at Willow Street and Orange Avenue in Signal Hill. He ran a red light and his car struck Harold L. Sweeney’s car, injuring Sweeney. Mounce’s vehicle crashed, ending at the cemetery fence.

Gunmen Take $12,000 From Chicago Store Safe

Three gunmen, tying up watchman Joseph Nohel, flooded a department store with tear gas and drilled the safe door to steal $12,000. Nohel described being forced to lie on a mattress while the intruders worked the safe for about three hours ending around 11 p.m. in Chicago.
