In California a Democratic surge in the primary yields Kuchel losing to Yorty for the Senate as Edward Roybal grabs the lieutenant governor nomination. Knight and Kuchel win GOP nods as party realignment appears, with Brown reelectable and Kirkwood, Johnson, and Jordan pushed to November runoffs.
City Council votes 6 to 2 to postpone the Uptown Civic Center initiative from July 1 to the November 2 state polls. Proponents threaten a writ of mandate. officials cite a 1939 court precedent and argue the delay saves $40,000 and yields broader representation. Only two councilors oppose delaying.
In Los Angeles Roosevelt decisively won the House seat over Owings as the Roosevelt ticket polled 1,64. votes and Owings 4,510 for the GOP. Ned Redding tallied 2,175 with 977 in 238 precincts. National Democratic Chairman Stephen Mitchell faced opposition amid strong Democratic registration. Owings, Culver City city clerk, said Democratic backing signals broad cross party support.
Fresno Municipal Judge Dan Eymann dismissed a drunken driving charge against Rep Harlan Hagen after city attorney Ozias cited congressional immunity. The case against Hagen's aide George Baker remains. Hagen heads to Washington to resume duties after claiming vindication of his protest against arrest. Hagen won renomination in the party primary but appeared to trail Al Balin in the Republican vote.
In Tokyo the U S Navy reports a PBM amphibian plane with 17 aboard disappeared on a flight from Iwakuni to Okinawa. It left Iwakuni at 530 a m and was last heard at 655 a m. Rescue efforts by U S Air Force Navy ships and Japanese forces found no trace amid bad weather. The aircraft was part of Patrol Squadron 47 at Iwakuni, carrying 15 crew and two Marine officers. Names withheld.

Congressional races list Kuchel vs Yorty for U S Senator and Hosmer vs Kennick for the 18th District.
Liberal coalition in Korea unites to back Lee Kee Noong for chairman of the new National Assembly, giving Syngman Rhee a likely solid working majority. The Long Beach area sees party labels influence its primaries with partisan lines, while incumbent Rep Craig Hose Imer, a Republican, faces Democrat Joseph M. Kenrick in November for the 18th district.
Voters in Long Beach area hit about 45 percent of registered voters in Tuesday's primary, surpassing forecasts. In the 18th Congressional District turnout reached 83.86 thousand of 188,659 registered voters. Hosmer won the GOP nomination with a strong showing while Kenrick led the Democratic side by just over two to one.
