LAS VEGAS UP The most powerful US atomic test since the dawn lit sky from Canada to Mexico and from the Golden Gate to Colorado. The AEC said a small wooden building 10 miles from the blast point collapsed but was unoccupied. A Long Beach Air Force Base sergeant and Paramount widow with five children plan to marry Friday night despite an anonymous telephone threat. Wallace A. Hellando, 32, fire department member, and Margaret Toll, 29, obtained a marriage license in Long Beach after the call reached Toll at her mother’s home. The caller warned he would kill the man if they wed, and spoke to Toll and the sergeant directly. They reported the incident to the Norwalk sheriff’s station.

Associated Press reports rising Sun River floodwaters forced residents from Tracy Neihart and Monarch near Great Falls Montana. Train wipes out family in fatal Burnham crash
A Michigan Central passenger train struck a crowded automobile at a crossing near Burnham on the Illinois Indiana border, killing a mother Catherine Zawacki and her three daughters Irene Skala Genevieve Kovac and Patricia Zawacki plus three granddaughters Barbara Davis Arlene Zawacki Jacqueline Kovack.
