Long Beach voters on election day ousted four incumbents and left a remaining council seat in doubt while approving six ballot propositions. Absentee ballots and final canvass will decide if the Ninth District seat joins the wave of change.
In Long Beach a major city election produced a historic result as Ruth H. Bach won District 2, becoming the first woman on the council and the first rep from the Lakewood annexation area. The ballot shift unseated veteran leaders while Don May, Mrs Frances Bach, and former councilmen Clark and Jackson also lost.
Long Beach voters elected Ruth Bach the city’s first woman on the council amid broad support for safety building and airport liquor measures. Prop A carried 29,273 to 22,637, Prop B funds a downtown safety complex, Prop C funds and tidelands plans, and Prop D allows bond reserve fund transfers. Open house welcomed neighbors as results poured in and Bach affirmed women’s city involvement.
Roy M. Cohn, chief counsel for the McCarthy subcommittee, says Secretary Stevens and Army Counselor Adams tried to halt the Army inquiry into Communists. He testifies that officials believed exposure could reflect on them and questions whether the Army would run its own probe if the McCarthy hearings ended. Cohn denies improper pressure for Schine’s draft and argues Stevens and Adams acted in bad faith.
Three airmen from March Air Force Base died in a truck automobile collision near here. The coroner identified the deceased as Airman 3/c John J. McDonald of Pyrites New York Airman 1/c Roy B. Penouilk of New Orleans and Airman 3/c Harry B. Simmons Jr. of Chicago Illinois. The truck driver Chico W Hyeda 30 and Tahy ski Metsueds 35 of Los Angeles were injured.
Seoul reports that twelve hundred officers and men of the U S 40th Sunburst Division sailed for California home to end 232 years of duty in Korea. The troopship General Weigel will dock in San Francisco around June 15 with the unit and colors of the former California National Guard division.
POPLAR BLUFF Mo Four members of a farm family died in an early day home explosion that leveled their four room frame house. Zacharieh Bolen 67 and three of his children Jimmy 14 Mary 12 and Allen 5 were trapped inside as flames spread. Bolen's wife 51 was critically burned and another child Wayne 10 suffered arm burns while Priscilla 8 escaped uninjured.

Superior Court Judge Beach Vasey halted the proposed incorporation of South Lakewood, population about 20,000, ordering the board to revoke earlier incorporation orders. The ruling paused action but allowed future moves if increment 107 is excluded and new petitions with signatures are filed. The writ favored annexation supporters and defined the increment107 boundaries and location.
President Eisenhower touted an impressive list of accomplishments in fighting communism and subversion at a news conference. He declined to discuss McCarthy’s controversy, saying his objective is to enact the legislative program while federal agencies quietly pursue subversives under due process. The prepared statement highlighted prosecutions of Communist leaders and expansion of the attorney general’s list of subversive organizations.
Foster Bray of Cypress ran from the parking lot to the Douglas Aircraft plant time clock on Tuesday afternoon and soon fell unconscious. A physician pronounced him dead, apparently from a heart attack. The body was taken to Christensen and Pino Mortuary.
President Eisenhower refused to voice an opinion on the AEC security board decision barring J Robert Oppenheimer from access to secret atomic files. He said the case remains under quasi judicial review and would not comment until the appeal is settled. Oppenheimer heads the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and his lawyers seek reversal.

Senator McCarthy disclosed he holds alarming information on Communist infiltration of hydrogen and atomic bomb facilities and said a White House meeting last June led to rejection of public hearings. He cited CIA infiltration as more serious than prior Army radar lab subversion and said investigations will hinge on a committee vote.
A prowler was chased by a New York resident after attempting entry in a yard. The suspect fled on foot, then was cornered near a 1951 convertible. The car pursuit ended with the prowler repelling from the vehicle.
