Stevens Orders Complete Check on All Army Officer Candidates

Secretary of the Army Stevens issued a high priority directive effective July 1 requiring FBI and agency checks on all applicants for commissions as officers or warrant officers. The move aims to shield national security by blocking candidates with questionable ties or information from serving. It follows the Peress case, where a doctor was promoted during a security inquiry, drawing scrutiny in the Stevens McCarthy dispute. The rule excludes enlisted ranks and officers’ eligibility remains under review by the Secretary.

Solon Sees Good Prospect for Action on Postman Pay

Senator Carlson of Kansas said Congress has a good prospect to act on a pay raise for about 500000 postal workers and a million civil service employees. The Senate Post Office and Civil Service Committee approved a 6% raise for both groups. The measure may go to the floor today amid end of session activity. Carlson aims to speed passage by linking it to a minor bill already cleared by the House. If the Senate passes the revised version, it returns to the House for final approval before a zone to President Eisenhower.
