Nine of twelve aboard the 33 foot Spare Time were missing after a boat explosion near Santa Monica at 4 p.m. yesterday. Three life jacket clad survivors James Knight Harold Halley and Buzzy Sackse were found 14 miles off Santa Monica by a searching boat. Halley was badly burned and hospitalized. rescued men were taken to Santa Monica. The wreck prompted Coast Guard and lifeguards to converge, with relatives awaiting updates as the list of aboard members was read.

Missing Girl Found Slain Near Santa Barbara Hills
The badly beaten body of 11 year old Mary Varis was found 15 miles north of Santa Barbara after she left a movie with Pat Mawry. Sheriff John D. Ross said the skull injury and broken jaw were fatal and there was no sign of rape. Mary was reported missing by her sister Clyde Whitlow. A 14 year old friend said six sailors followed them but made no advance. The body was discovered near Hobo Rock in San Marcos Pass by picnicker Wills Brooks.

L A Woman Falls From Plane Over Atlantic
An American-born woman, Marie Elizabeth Westbrook Capellaro, fell from a Pan American Stratocruiser after a door blew open 12 000 feet above the Atlantic during a Rio to Montevideo flight. She was the widow of U S Air Force Col Robert B Westbrook and had planned to marry Emilio Capellaro. The plane returned to Rio and Brazilian Air Force planes searched the area.
