Police Officer Kills Wife and Lover Then Self at Vets Hospital
Los Angeles motorcycle officer Donald M. Alden shot and killed his wife Harriette and Eugene Henry in a parked car near Sawtelle Veterans Administration Hospital. He then entered the hospital, fatally shot his wife, and killed himself after retrieving a second gun. Witnesses noted Alden wore his uniform and entered with a third gun. The FBI joined the federal-property case. Alden had served since 1949, living in Van Nuys.

Maude Adams widely regarded as the greatest American actress died today at her Tan nersville home after a weeklong illness at age 80. She had been treated in Catskill's Greene County Memorial Hospital last spring for bronchitis and pleurisy and discharged in April in good spirits. Adams starred on Broadway for more than 25 years and was famed for the title role in Peter Pan and other Barrie works such as The Little Minister. She never married and lived quietly on a farm near Tannersville.

Arlington Virginia police charged 22 year old George Edwin Birch with assault with a deadly weapon. Officers Bamman and Powers responded to a disturbance at the Birch apartment. Taft Leaves Senate Leadership for Rest of Session

Jet Fighter Crash injures two near Portland
Multnomah County police reported an F-96 Nightfighter crashed east of Blue Lake Park in Portland. Both men aboard were taken to Providence Hospital badly injured. The crash occurred about three miles from Portland Air Base at 11 p.m. Thursday.
