Miss Hansen Crowned Miss U. S. A. in Pageant

Blond Myrna Hansen, an 18 year old from Chicago, won Miss U. S. A. in the Miss Universe pageant and faced cameras as she accepted the crown. Judging of foreign contestants continues at Municipal Auditorium with Miss Hansen also receiving a $2500 watch, a Hillman Minx, and a motion picture prize.

Allies Present New Proposal to End Truce Deadlock

United Nations Command gave the Communists 48 hours to reply to a new proposal designed to advance a Korea armistice. A messenger delivered the message from Allied Supreme Headquarters to Lt. Gen. Kam K. Harris on Thursday. A 48 hour recess was set to study the plan and Rhee’s pledge to honor the armistice, with the next talks due Saturday at 2 p.m. Long Beach time. Harrison had walked out of the previous session.

Fish Bite Ravages Leg of Texas Swimmer

A young Texas woman, 26 year old Mattie Gunn of Longview, was severely bitten in knee depth surf at Jung Beach by a fish, likely a barracuda. Surgeons at St. Mary's Hospital performed a three hour operation to save her left leg, which was nearly severed between ankle and knee.

In Birmingham a 50 year old man died after tumbling from an operating table during a lung cancer operation. Coroner heard doctors and a nurse briefly turned away after the belt was unfastened. Verdict recorded as accidental death.

Final Outcome of New Attack Still Uncertain

Seoul accord­ing to AP reports South Korean infantrymen ordered to stay and fight held at Kumhwa as 17,000 Chinese Red assault forces pressed along a 20 mile front. Chinese divisions surged toward Kumhwa from the west while South Korean divisions counterattacked near the Kumsong River, trapping many enemy units in rapid flux. Col William Spicer noted the attacking force surged on Sniper Ridge and other approaches.

300 Yanks Lost in Red Drive

At least 300 Americans of an overrun artillery battalion were killed or captured Tuesday during the great Chinese Red surge southwest of Kumsong. The battalion supported the Republic of Korea Capitol Division as 1000 Chinese swarmed 105 mm howitzers, leaving only five to be pulled out. Captain Guy A. Giampa cited 3000 yard firing and rapid Chinese advance, describing desperate hand to hand combat amid wrecked tubes and mangled breeches.

Falling Radio Tower Crashes Into Queens Shore

A mid footing steel radio relay tower on East River pilings toppled onto the Queens shore near a playground with 200 children nearby. Five people in cars or on foot were injured, none seriously, and a power line was torn down causing a blackout for about an hour. The 733 ton tower, erected three weeks earlier by WL8, failed and the cause was not determined.

Cut of Billion Dollars in Foreign Aid Looms

A House Appropriations Subcommittee reported a 1.1 billion dollar cut in President Eisenhower’s foreign aid request, slicing 800 million from military assistance and about 335 million from economic and other aid. The recommendations go to the full committee, with Eisenhower pressing against further cuts. Congress has authorized over 5.15 billion for aid, but actual funds depend on appropriations. House Republicans opposed restoring cuts to Voice of America and Civil Defense funds, finalizing at 37.7 million for the latter.

Air Force aims for speed mark at El Centro

AF launches bid for a world air speed record over a desert course at El Centro California. Lt Col William F Barns, a North American Aviation plant representative from Baltimore and Palos Verdes Estates, will pilot the F-86D Sabre Jet with a target speed of 700 mph or more. Killer Suspect Surrenders in Lynwood

Danny A. Kirchner a 24 year old Long Beach cab driver surrendered today at his attorney's Lynwood office. He was booked on murder charges and arraigned in Compton Municipal Court. Police say Kirchner killed Jack A. Davis 31 cafe owner during a dispute after a reconciliation with Davis's wife Kay Davis 30.

Teenagers Sentenced to Electric Chair in Brooklyn Killing
