Mideast Foes Given U.N. Plan and New Mexico Standoff
United States and Canada push Israel and Egypt to accept a two phase plan to end the Sinai standoff. The proposal calls for immediate Israeli withdrawal from Aqaba Gulf and Gaza, UNEF posting along the armistice line, and UN surveillance of Gaza. Egypt opposes occupation by any state or the UN, and Cairo papers say Egypt will not consent. In New Mexico, rancher John Prather fights relocation as McGregor Range expands, while Army plans and land condemnation proceed. The dispute centers on Prather's eight sections inside the range and a long effort to finish a fire break. Military officials declined comment on Prather's stance.
