Polio Stricken Mennonite Girls Travel by Train
Two Lancaster County sisters Miriam Sauder age 12 and Mildred 18, both paralyzed by polio, arrived in Pittsburgh by train and were admitted to the D. T. Watson Home for Crippled Children in Leetsdale. Their mother said the trip via rail was chosen over ambulance, with the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis covering all costs. The girls had respirators and oxygen. their family had not sought Salk vaccine for the older child earlier.
