New Polio Virus Isolation Method Reported
Dr. William M M Kirby of the University of Washington described a diagnostic method, developed by Dr John Enders, that isolates polio viruses and helps confirm polio absence in suspected cases. The technique identified unknown viruses in 15 of 30 presumed nonparalytic cases, with high success in paralytic cases and lower in nonparalytic ones. The Western Society of Clinical Research heard updates and noted a large number of a rare polio type. The meeting also cited a drug, azathioprine, showing temporary relief in adult leukemia patients, and named Dr Travis Winsor as next year’s president.
