Ike Urges U N Try Chinese Cease Fire
President Eisenhower urged U N efforts to broker a cease fire with Chinese forces near Formosa and Tachens, arguing for limited American commitments under the Chiang Kai-shek defense pact while weighing the strategic value of the Tachens as an outpost. He avoided speculating on U S actions and criticized Democratic calls to balance the budget, noting plans to reduce spending toward 60 billion dollars in four years. The president also commented on foreign trade views and defense official Harold Wilson, and defended Senator Harry Cain’s criticism of government worker security.
