Rioting Convicts Ignite Pittsburgh Prison

Rioting convicts about 1000 strong seized Western State Penitentiary in Pittsburgh defying officials and prompting deployment of 72 state troopers and hundreds of police. Warden Claudy and Gov. Fine rejected surrender terms as the siege continued with hostages and no shots fired.

Truman Packs for Departure

President Truman faced a final busy day in Washington preparing to leave the White House. Gunman Robs Hollywood Bank Branch for $3000

A gunman robbed the Selma and Vine California Bank branch today of about $3000. Teller Lucille Langley reported a man about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds pointed a gun and demanded $100, 350, 10, and 5 dollar bills before fleeing in an automobile.

Tragic Double Death Near San Bernardino

Two young Long Beach victims, Sheila McClain 17 of Bell Gardens and Richard McLaughlin 19, were found shot to death in a car east of San Bernardino. Sheriff’s detectives term it murder death by own action with McLaughlin the shooter. Sheila wore engagement ring. no notes were found. Race on Highway Fatal for Three

The California Highway Patrol reported a highway race southeast of Fresno ended in a fatal collision killing three Fresno County residents and injuring four others. Victims were Joe P. Renteria 22 of Fresno the driver, Betty Martinez 18 passenger, and James H. Wells 42 of Selma. Manuel G. Jaramilla 28 of Biola the second racing car driver was arrested for questioning and admitted racing with Renteria. Estimed speed 85 to 90 mph. The crash sent Wells’ car 94 feet.

Sunshine Forecast for Presidential Inauguration Day

The Weather Bureau revised forecasts to allow for considerable cloudiness with some sun. Temperatures will range from 45 to 50 degrees as partial sunshine is expected 11 p m to 4 30 p m, just before the outdoor ceremonies and parade.
