Rescue of 5 Year Old From 22 Foot Pit Ordeal
A five year old girl named Laura Mae Mac Helser fell 22 feet into a mining test hole two miles northeast of Gilberton Pennsylvania. After two hours rescue workers used two steel bars and a rope to hoist her to the surface while her father aided and reassured her.

Prelate Dies En Route Home From Vatican City
Msgr. John Cawley 71 of Los Angeles died of a heart attack at Geneva Airport after a plane carrying 12 Catholic prelates including Cardinal Spellman made an unscheduled stop to avoid bad weather. He had been returning from the Vatican consistory where Cardinal McIntyre and 23 others were elevated to the College of Cardinals. The body will be brought to Los Angeles with aid from local church officials.

Frank Carter Lewis, a 50 year old cannery supervisor from Huntington Beach Blvd, jailed on felony morals offenses involving seven or eight local schoolboys.
