Train passengers rescued after Sierra Nevada standoff
Two hundred twenty two travelers were freed from a snowbound City of San Francisco Pullman car near Emigrant Gap California after a slow rescue effort. Highway plows and trucks reached within a mile, then snow tractors ferried them to waiting autos and relief trains. Medical teams and nurses aided victims as fuel ran low and carbon monoxide concerns were addressed. The relief operation moved to clear the stranded passengers with expected continued arrivals by dog sled and snowbound routes tonight or tomorrow.

US to push new disarmament proposals at UN

Fire tragedy as eight Die in Oregon house blaze
In Coos Bay Oregon a fast moving fire killed eight children in an uncompleted house nine miles north of town. Thomas Weeks 45 a logger wife and a 14 year old daughter Dolores survived with noncritical burns. Beverly 16 and seven others perished in the flames. The family slept upstairs while two younger children were downstairs. A wood stove heating system may have started the blaze.
