Smyth Got Tax Job Blamed on Democratic Clique
Congressional tax probers heard that James G. Smyth was appointed by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945 despite unfavorable reports and that a group of Democratic office holders influenced the San Francisco office. Testimony named Smyth and five aides as leaders of the bureau, amid broader questions on tax assessments and the $935,943 public relations fund for beer lobbyist Arthur Samish. Public hearings set to resume to hear deputy collector Thomas J. Doolan’s 15 charges.

Acheson Quizzed on Fliers Fines
Washington February 7 United States paid Hungary 120000 for the release of four American fliers after 40 days on spy charges. Senator Hunt said the life of any one man was worth more than the sum and noted Acheson faced a closed Senate session on the matter. Critics argued the fliers should have served their jail terms, then paid the 30 each. Hunt defended the decision.
