Communists press for full peace talks at Panmunjom

At Panmunjom the North Korean lieutenant general Nam Il presented a proposal for a full-dress peace conference within 90 days of a Korean armistice to negotiate foreign troop withdrawal and a broader Far East settlement. Duke Will Return but Not Duchess

New York report says the Duke of Windsor will sail tonight to attend the funeral of King George VI, while the Duchess remains in the United States. He will depart from Southampton aboard the Queen Mary. the couple have lived in seclusion since Edward VIII abdicated. Masked witness details Katyn forest killings at hearing

A Pillow-slipped masked witness testified before Congress that he and two companions saw about 200 Polish officers executed in Katyn Forest near Smolensk in October 1939. He described prisoners being shot and some being thrown alive into a mass grave as Russians carried out the massacre.

The House armed services committee approved a compulsory Universal Military Training bill 27 to 7 in a closed session. Patient in N Y Grabs Gun Wounds Two

In New York a male patient in Bellevue Hospital’s psychiatric ward seized a patrolman’s gun and fired, wounding two officers. Patrolman William Kennerly, 30, was seriously hurt in the neck, and Patrolman Michael Bonura, 26, received a flesh wound.

In Pasadena on February 6 Mrs. Rita Barker 26 won a divorce from her auto mechanic husband James 28. She told Superior Judge Kurtz Kauffman he bathed about every three months and compared their marriage to lovemaking in an automobile. The judge granted the divorce on grounds of extreme cruelty.

Death of King George VI Ends British Reign

King George VI died in his sleep at Sandringham at 56 after a long illness and a cancerous lung operation. Elizabeth II, 25, became queen to reign with her coronation likely in early summer. The new monarch learned of the death while in Kenya with Prince Philip and prepared to return as Windsor Castle prepared for the funeral.

Keller Returns Lost Watch To Helen Keller

Helen Keller, the 71 year old blind and deaf author, retrieved a specially made watch that helps her tell time. The watch, given 57 years ago by Netherlands consul general John Hitz in Washington, was pawned for 220 by a man using a fictitious name before being recovered by Richard Weaver of the pawnbrokers association. Keller had left the watch in an overnight bag in a taxicab January 17 and traveled from Westport, Connecticut to New York to receive it. She called the return almost like a lost companion and expressed happiness.
