California supervisors oppose four cent sales tax plan
Sacramento debate on raising state sales tax to four cents drew support from the League of California Cities and the California Retailers Association who want funds for cities and counties based on local sales. County Supervisors Association leader William R. MacDougall condemned the plan, arguing one cent would yield 149 million with 17 million to counties, urging a one fourth share for counties to curb incorporation races. Advocates cited uniformity and warehouse tax exemptions, while opponents warned shifts burden to homeowners and small businesses.
