City Summer Playground Recreation Is Declared A Success
The nine week city playground rec program closed Friday and officials hail it as one of the most enthusiastic in Recreation Department annals. About 1000 youngsters learned to swim in free classes while 96 boys softball teams and 34 hardball teams played league games. 34 girls playground softball teams, 70 touch football teams, and 54 basketball teams competed in all city events. Attendance dipped versus 1949 due to school building and plant expansion drawing portions of the population away. Frances Dixon notes 500 youths involved in aquatics.
