Autoist Gets Jail Term In Hit Run Case
Long Beach man Henry T. McLaughlin 33 of 1565 Canal Ave pled guilty to felony hit run driving for striking a woman’s car, breaking three vertebrae. He received six months in county jail and five years probation, with advice to join Alcoholics Anonymous. Victim Blanche C. Vickery of Wilmington suffered multiple neck and spine fractures. The judge urged the defendant to turn his life around.

Virginia woman booked for bookmaking
Virginia woman Jean Stamme, 28, unemployed shipping clerk, was arrested Tuesday at 25 Plymouth St on bookmaking charges. Police seized betting paraphernalia and heard bets by telephone. She admitted running the business but said she had been there only two days. Released on an $800 writ returnable Sept. 2 in Superior Court.

Women Safe in Paint Fire at California Ave Home
A 49 year old woman escaped unharmed after a flash fire in her kitchen at 5984 California Ave. She had warmed a can of paint in a basin of water on the stove when fumes ignited. Firefighters led by Battalion Chief William K R Mendenhall extinguished the blaze damaging kitchen walls and porch.

Long Beach health officer Dr. I B Litwack announced a drop in communicable diseases for the week ending Aug 20 with 43 cases, down from 54. Mumps led with 16 cases, up five from the prior week. other diseases included chickenpox, measles, tuberculosis, gonorrhea, whooping cough, diphtheria, and infectious hepatitis.
