Bribe Case Goes to Jurors in San Diego
San Diego Superior Court jurors begin deliberations on guilt or innocence of Charles E. Berry former San Diego Imperial counties liquor administrator and two others charged with bribery in issuing liquor licenses. Al Bennett and Harry W. Steeile indicted on 12 counts of bribery grand theft attempted grand theft and conspiracy. Prosecution says Steetle received 15 500 of 39 000 paid by license seekers. Witnesses claimed payments up to 80 900 to obtain licenses. Berry’s office issued permits for a fee of 525. Defense maintains no direct link to Berry. Also, Deputy Atty Gen. William Bennett resumes bid to revoke Southern California liquor licenses obtained through fraud.
