14 Year Old Girl Found Slain In Somerville Home

A 14 year old girl, Mary Di Rocco, was discovered dead in her Somerville residence with five bullet wounds and signs of attempted arson. Police pursued Mildred McDonald, a 25 year old former girlfriend of the victim’s brother, as a person of interest after she skipped work and vanished. Authorities believe McDonald visited a Boston bar and may have possessed a pistol, with witnesses identifying her in a photo. Detectives continue inquiries as page A-7 details follow.

Eisenhower to Dedicate Falcon Dam on U S Mexican Border

President Eisenhower will meet Mexican President Ruiz Cortines and dedicate Falcon Dam on the Rio Grande about 75 miles downstream from Laredo Texas. He will also address the Future Farmers of America in Kansas City on October 15 and speak in New Orleans for the Louisiana sesquicentennial on October 17. Falcon Dam was built jointly by the United States and Mexico to aid the lower Rio Grande Valley.

Reds Restrict Red Cross Interviews in Korea

U N Red Cross officials returned from three weeks in Communist North Korea reporting they could only interview hand picked prisoners of war under armed escort. The 30 man team led by R M Jerram of Cornwall England said restrictions delays and arguments created general frustration. Some prisoners and progressives reportedly selected for interviews spoke with interpreters while others remained inaccessible.

Fight Brings Angeles Fire Near Control

A fire in Angeles National Forest near Lake Hughes was nearing full control. The brush and timber burn area was revised to 518 acres with a 43 mile perimeter and only 0.7 mile remains uncontrolled near Pine Canyon ranger station. Lake Hughes remains safe while 348 firefighters work, wind easing, full control expected by 8 p.m. Logged personnel include 244 Forest Service and 104 LA County firemen with 100 on the active front.

Polio Cases in Long Beach Area Double Last Year

The Long Beach Unified School District area reports 62 infantile paralysis cases so far, nearly double the 35 by Aug 25, 1952. Two new cases were added today within Long Beach City limits, one paralytic in a 10-year-old boy and one bulbar in an 18-year-old girl, per the local National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis chapter.

New Zealand backs India on truce at United Nations

At the UN General Assembly, New Zealand urged India be included in the Korean Peace Conference. Power Line Falls Darkens East L E City and Explodes Boiler

A power outage blacked the east side of the city about 4 am after a high voltage line burned out near Pacific Coast Hayard and Walnut Ave. A boiler explosion at Seasides Hospital injured night engineer Harold Elliott 42 as gas fumes ignited when the pilot light failed after electric service resumed. Two other boilers remained safe and power to the harbor district was off briefly.

Fog Blankets Coast and Inland Areas in Southern California

A thick fog bank covered the coast from Long Beach to Orange County, delaying ship movements at Los Angeles Harbor until about 9 a.m. and forcing cancellation of a 6:15 a.m. United Airlines flight at Long Beach Municipal Airport. By 9 a.m. visibility was about one mile, with later flights expected to proceed. No traffic accidents were reported due to fog, as motorists exercised extra caution. The foggy conditions extended along the coast from Los Angeles County southward.

Jailer Fired After Tijuana Jail Drug Cache Found

Sunset Beach Man Abducts Movie Usher

James Meredith Cronk, 21, of Sunset Beach, allegedly abducted an usherette in front of a downtown theater and held a crowd at gunpoint for over an hour. He boarded a bus with the victim, later forced her and neighbors to accompany him to her home where eight people were kept at bay until police were summoned. Cronk faces kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon charges and is jailed in lieu of $1500 bail for a preliminary hearing.
