Captain Vandi Returns After 235 Years In Captivity
Air Force Captain Eugene J. Vandi, freed from a Chinese prison where he claimed his B 29 was shot down near the Yalu River in North Korea in January 1953, returns home to LA FARGEVILLE with his wife in tears. He plans to resume duty after a brief leave with his parents and two daughters present.

Two Killed in Blast off Golden Gate
A gas explosion aboard the Norwegian motor ship Tancred killed two crewmen Kjell Pettersen 21 and Anders Lund 17 and seriously burned four others including engineer Anders Tutteland who was in critical danger. The blast occurred noon Saturday 120 miles from the Golden Gate disabling the ship’s electrical system and radio.

Quake May Portend Hawaii Eruption
A volcano expert warned that a five minute quake on Hawaii Island could signal renewed Mauna Loa activity. The 2:28 a.m. Sunday tremor, rated five on the scale, caused dishware to fall and walls to crack at a farm about 40 miles southwest of Hilo.
