A dozen convicts armed with homemade knives seized 14 hostages at Washington State Penitentiary, but surrendered after telephone persuasion and tear gas. The revolt follows a July uprising by 15 inmates from the county jail at Yakima. No injuries reported.
A 13 year old Corona bull rider was sucked into a three foot outlet at Prado Dam and carried half a mile under water. An unidentified Santa Ana Canyon woman pulled him from the water and performed artificial respiration. He recovered with a bump on the head and was released by Corona Hospital.
Aiding by light winds and high humidity, about 300 fighters from Angeles, San Bernardino and Cleveland National Forests plus Los Angeles County crews battled the San Gabriel Mountain blaze started Sunday in San Gabriel Canyon. It had burned 425 acres and threatened Bear Creek Canyon and Pine Mountain as picnickers and campers were warned to evacuate. Foreman Bill Longacre was injured fighting the fire.
In Dover, Florence Chadwick failed to swim the English Channel both ways. Thomas Park of Long Beach finished 20 minutes behind Abdel Latif Abu Heif of Egypt in a two-way race. Park, 32, teaches swimming. the Egyptian’s time was 11 hours 44 minutes, near the 10 hours 51 minutes record. Eighten swimmers started. prize total 5320.
Miami AP reports hurricane warnings hoisted from Brunswick Georgia to Wilmington North Carolina as Diane the fourth tropical storm of the season moves toward the southeast coast. Forecasters expect warnings for Georgia and South Carolina with North Carolina already alerted. Diane’s peak winds reach 113 mph and its hurricane-force winds extend 230 miles around the center. The storm advanced about 15 mph, centered roughly 600 miles east southeast of Jacksonville, with a projected northward turn. officials noted shifting threat toward North Carolina and areas north.
Geneva police hunted for a small radioactive cobalt shard missing from the Atoms for Peace exhibit in downtown Geneva. The piece, displayed by a French firm on an open stand, was a quarter inch thick and postage stamp sized, encased in copper film to prevent contact, and officials warned it could injure anyone who handled it.
Indian Nationalists marching into Portuguese India clashed with Portuguese police. Five killed and at least 38 injured as thousands crossed borders into Goa and Daman while banners flew the Indian tricolor. Nehru supported the protest but urged peace and warned India would not send its army.

Julie Cruze age 24 unwed mother of Little Chief Drinkwater was found sobbing in Torrance after abandoning her infant. She was booked for child desertion as juvenile officers linked the baby to foster care earlier. The infant born June 27 in Torrance was at the county foster home before being returned to Cruzes care.
California Highway Patrol cites four traffic errors speeding right of way miscues improper turns and drunk driving as causes of 105437 violations in 1954. CHP official Bernard R Caldjis warns reckless behavior leads to accidents injuries or death.
A 7 year old girl was abducted on a Compton street and kept for six hours before an ice cream vendor intervened. The suspect Everado Martinez, 40, was booked on suspicion of kidnapping as Joyce Pike was reunited with her relieved parents. The incident began while Joyce and a companion were returning from an ice cream outing and ended with a car crash when Martinez allegedly lost control.
American singer Warren Hayes, who had just finished a gig at the Vogue Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, died after leaping from a tenth floor window as flames reached his room. Four others perished. a newlywed couple died from asphyxia on an eleventh floor. A helicopter rescue effort arrived too late and damage was about 150000 dollars. A short circuit is suspected as the fire cause.
Raynardo Garcia denied rumors of burying a car in a Key West cemetery where workmen dug a large hole for four family burial vaults. Cemetery supervisor Robert Dean said Garcia told him he had not considered burying the automobile, and officials debated legality while a priest referred the issue to city authorities.
The Canadian Air Force reports an Imperial Oil Co. amphibian plane with six people aboard missing since Saturday night. The Silver Beaver departed Rocky Lake Saturday morning for a 250 mile flight to Regina Saskatchewan and has not arrived.
