Eisenhower Wins Farm Legislation Test in Senate
The Senate rejected a bid to prolong high level price supports on basic crops. The 48 to 40 vote scuttled Sen. Ellender’s amended proposal to maintain 90 percent supports for cotton, corn, wheat, rice, peanuts and tobacco for one year beyond current expiration. A separate bill contemplates flexible price supports, with further action pending before the Agriculture Committee. House leaders plan to combine four crops into a single bill and delay the wool measure. Senator Young denounced the flexible plan as dangerous to the economy.

Rebels Open New Attack on Fortress Isabella
Communist troops launched a fresh assault on the isolated Isabella fortress guarding Dien Bien Phu from the south. Heavy artillery and renewed pressure pushed within 50 yards of the French defenses while French Corsair fighters from the United States attacked rebel rear areas. Despite storms signaling the monsoon season, airlift remains vital though strained by shellfire, with limited relief arriving after a near record drop in supplies once weather allowed.

Toledo Bus Union Strike Opens City Transit Idle
About 435 AFL Bus Drivers Union members walked out at Toledo Community Tracton Co cutting public transportation for a city of 320,000. Mayor Ollie Czelusta and City Manager Arnold Finch urged residents to car pool as the dispute centers on wage increase awards from an arbitration board.
