Mrs. Bertha Elizabeth Smith 64 of 5643 California Ave died after handling a rattlesnake during church services at the General Assembly and Church of the First Born in Long Beach. Her son-in-law Few Jordan 35 of Brea also refused medical care after being bitten. Police say no law requires treatment. The group of about 20 worshipers handled the snake after services at 185 E Market St. Elder Smith cited a New Testament command as the cause. The scene and details remain under investigation.

Woman and abalone shell stop motel robbery
Elmer Mason 50 and his wife Tressa fought off two young bandits in a 3620 Santa Fe Ave motel break in early today. Mason hurled one man through a window after a struggle over a .38 revolver.
