Violence in Tennessee prompted Maryville officials to close the Southern Bell exchange after a 22 day strike disrupted nine southeastern states. Mayor Lea Callaway cited inability to provide adequate police protection as the reason for disconnecting all local service. Southern Bell Tennessee general manager S H Youngblood said Maryville was the only exchange ever closed due to a breakdown of law and order in the company’s 75 year history.
