Anchorage reports the third F-94B all weather jet unaccounted for late Thursday near Elmendorf Air Force Base. A fourth jet crashed on approach the same night, but the two man crew escaped injury. The missing plane had last radioed 65 miles northwest of Anchorage with no prior trouble indication.
Gen. Alfred M. Gruenther warned that Russia is mounting a major effort to isolate the United States from its Allies and may use peace talks to divide NATO. He said the move could complicate keeping the alliance intact while noting NATO is now about twice as strong as two years ago, yet faces tougher prospects amid economic strain and Russian diplomacy.
The Western world hints at renewed peace efforts as Moscow announces the release of 14 French civilians interned in Korea. The group, including Seoul staff members, marks another conciliatory gesture in the broader peace campaign. Molotov pledged to aid repatriation, with Britain and UN plans for swift repatriation of sick and wounded Allied prisoners under way.
Ethel Arata 53 known as Grandma Bandit was sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbing a bank of 257 dollars. A five year probation term for attempted bank robbery follows, to start after prison. Arata, daughter of late New York financier Robert Catts, pleaded guilty after psychiatrists found her sane. She had earlier claimed innocence and insanity pleas. Upon arrest Christmas Eve she admitted a wish to help humanity and said she had given away most of the stolen money.
David L. Cole, retiring chief of the federal mediation service, spoke with President Eisenhower about improving the handling of major labor disputes. He said he made recommendations but would not disclose specifics.
Voters in Long Beach attended polls early with sharp contrasts in turnout as residents faced 13 municipal projects to be funded by tidelands oil funds. In affected areas participation varied significantly, reflecting interest in the proposed developments.

Allied forces under the U S Third Division repelled a 173-man Chinese assault on a strategic hill northeast of Chorwon in central Korea. The two-hour hand to hand fight left fifteen Chinese dead on the hill with at least thirty more killed or wounded. U S troops maintained control throughout the action. Nearby, a Chinese battalion attacked ROK positions but was driven off in a 40 minute engagement.
In Taipei Formosa two in service jet trainers, the first planes for Chiang Kai-Shek's Nationalist forces, arrived today. Officials said more jets would be delivered later to bolster the air force.

Pete Nieto a 19 year old Artesia resident was placed on three year probation in Long Beach Superior Court and ordered to serve eight months in county jail for two counts of manslaughter arising from a Nov 23 head on collision at Carson Street and Woodruff Avenue that killed Reva Parke 26 and her 3 year old daughter Sandy. The Parke family was injured as witnesses testified Nieto was driving at 65 to 70 mph. The judge ordered restitution for medical expenses and the jury found gross negligence though recommended county jail.

Twenty five worshipers were overcome by carbon monoxide gas in the Protestant church at Elmschenbagen near Kiel. Gas leaked from basement air conditioning pipes during a communion service. Nineteen were sent to hospital. most victims were women. All were reported recovering.
A New York Times dispatch from Jakarta reports 2,000,000 people in Central Java at risk from Merapi Volcano activity. lava streams 50 feet wide run along the northern ridge while rumbling noises and rapid lava development occur on eastern and western slopes. Dr. G De Were of the Indonesian Volcano Logical Service calls the situation very serious.
In Tulsa Oklahoma police questioned six suspects in the murder of 11 year old Phyllis Jean Warren whose body was found by her dog near her home. Warren had been missing since March 12 and was discovered in an abandoned coal pit. Authorities say a blue belt was wrapped around her neck and the girl was struck on the head. Doctors were checking for possible sexual assault. The father found the body after the dog began digging near the pit. One suspect, 21, on probation, refused a Lie detector test previously.
