Douglas Pays Governor Won't Back Wage to Oppose Demos
Retroactive wages totaling 558000 were distributed today to about 17000 Douglas Aircraft Co employes in the Long Beach division. The payments to CIO LAW bargaining unit members reflect terms in the new contract with Loreal N No 148 of the UAW. The pact, accented March 7, provides a wage increase of five to seven cents an hour and retroactivity to Easter, 13, expiring with the old contract. The program cost is borne by the company and many bargaining unit jobs were upgraded. The contract is in force until March 15, 1956. California Governor Knight said he will not campaign against Democrats who supported his tax program and will not oppose Republicans who fail to back his tax plea. He seeks 80 million dollars more in taxes to cover a 100 million dollar anticipated deficit in the 1935-56 budget. He will not threaten Republicans or pursue recriminations.
