Kuwait Accepts Arab Summit to Aid Palestinians

Kuwait agreed to attend an Arab summit proposed by Egypt to help Palestinian forces in Lebanon. Kuwait's Deputy Premier Sheikh Jaber Al-Ali said Kuwait would join any meeting to support Palestinians and end fratricide in Lebanon. The summit, involving Lebanon Syria PLO Saudi Arabia and Egypt, may be held in Jeddah to seek speedy, protective solutions.

Syrian Christian forces press Palestinian pockets in Lebanon mountains

Syrian and Christian forces closed in on Palestinian resistance in Lebanon's central mountains. The Palestinians lost Hammana Mtein and Aintoura, cutting off main lines of defense while the front along Jabel El Knisse remained contested. Spokesmen said pockets are being wiped out as tactics shifted to mobile infantry.

Congress vows session to avert PWEA pocket veto

House and Senate leaders pledge to stay in session beyond the weekend to prevent a pocket veto of the Public Works Employment Act appropriations bill. The funds would back Lompoc projects including a new city hall at Floresta Park, a reservoir, storm drains, and fire station rehab. President Ford has not signed the $3.7 billion bill. Lagomarsino warns a veto is possible.

Ford says golf treks not improper

President Ford defended golfing trips as guest of corporate executives while in Congress saying there was no impropriety and any discussions of government matters were casual. He listed U S Steel Bethlehem Steel Aluminum Corporation of America and Firestone Rubber as hosts and noted friends’ comments might have been helpful to him as a Michigan congressman.

Massive baleen whale fossil found in Lompoc quarry

Paleontologists led by Dr. Lawrence G. Barnes recover a 10 to 12 million year old baleen whale skeleton from Gresco diatomite quarries in Lompoc. The fossil, nearly 80 feet long when complete, requires careful plastic cement wrapping and extensive plaster and burlap support.

Medicare fee increases raise hospital and nursing home costs

The government announced a 19 percent base rise in Medicare hospital fees and extended stay charges effective January 1. Beneficiaries will pay the first 124 dollars of a hospital bill, up from 104 dollars. For long stays, daily costs rise to 31 dollars on days 61 to 90, and 15.50 dollars per day for skilled nursing care from day 21 to 100.

Ford signs veteran pension hike at White House ceremony

President Ford signed two bills increasing veteran benefits to offset rising living costs. The first provides an eight percent boost to disability and survivor benefits, effective immediately, while the second extends an eight percent pension increase for about 2.3 million veterans and dependents through 1976 with a further seven percent rise starting January 1.
