Rico Carty fueled Atlanta with a two run homer as the Braves beat the San Diego Padres 4-2 to move within one win or a San Francisco loss of clinching the National League Western Division title.
Ohio State under Woody Hayes opened the 1969 season with a 62 0 victory over Texas Christian before a record crowd of 86 412. Rex Kern threw 58 yards to Bruce Jankowski and scored twice as the No 1 ranked Buckeyes dominated.
Thousand Oaks defeats Lompoc 36-27 as Dan Herman directs the Lancers to a late fourth quarter clincher with a 57 yard pass to Steve Skeie and a successful two point try. Nelson Carter leads Lompoc with 153 rushing yards while Garife passes for 205 yards.
Cincinnati uses substitute quarterback Sam Wyche to topple previously undefeated Kansas City 24-19. Wyche delivers an 80-yard fourth quarter TD to Bob Trump, Clem Turner recovery sparks a Jess Phillips TD and the Bengals earn their third straight win. Greg Cook out with injury.
Billy Casper seized the Alcan title at Portland Golf Club by birdying the final four holes to erase a Trevino lead, earning $55,000 as Trevino faltered with a bogey at 16 and a triple bogey at 17. Casper called the finish unbelievable after the dramatic windup.
Hancock College defeated College of the Desert 41-7 at Huyck Stadium. Carl Shelton scored twice and added a 29 yard reception. Roge r Pacheco connected on two TD passes. The defense held Roadrunners to 37 rushing yards and made three interceptions.
Vikings reserve QB Joe Kapp threw seven touchdown passes tying a record, leading Minnesota to a 52-14 victory over Baltimore. He completed 28 of 43 passes for 449 yards and found six receivers for scores. Other NFL results included Green Bay over San Francisco 14-7 and Philadelphia over Pittsburgh 41-27.
In San Diego Bill Sterett captained Miss Budweiser to the Gold Cup and the 1969 national driving title with a $13,500 prize. Myr's Special, Dean Chenoweth, and Pride Of Pay N Pak chased through three heats on Mission Bay before mechanical issues favored Sterett’s lead.
San Diego State hosts a 49 0 win over Los Angeles State as Dennis Shaw throws three touchdown passes and the Aztecs dominate on both sides of the ball. UC Santa Barbara wins 21 6 at Nevada Reno while Cal Poly San Luis Obispo blasts Western Washington 44 0.
