City opposes beer and wine sale at Lompoc Fast Gas station

The City Planning Commission backed the Community Development Department in opposing Douglas Oil Co. request to sell packaged beer and wine from the Fast Gas station at 1216 E Ocean Ave. ABC must post for 30 days before a decision, with protests possible. City cites zoning rules and concerns over many youths at the station and nearby liquor outlets.

Burglary Arrests in Lompoc Home Case

Four youths including two adults were arrested for burglarizing Lompoc City Councilman George L. Cotsenmeyer's home at 309 S. Sixth St. Adults Marvin Nottbohm and Timothy Lewis were booked in Lompoc Jail, with bail to be set. Two 16 year old juveniles were turned over to probation. About $150 in currency was taken. most was recovered. A car sighting helped police locate the suspects within four hours.

Action council to meet Friday in Lompoc Valley

The Community Action Council of Lompoc Valley meets Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 217 W. Maple Ave to hold a sack lunch and business session. A nominating committee will select a candidate to represent the group on the Santa Barbara County Community Action Commission.

Goleta Valley property owners and Santa Barbara auto dealers seek a new auto center on 14 acres along Hollister Ave but planning staff again recommends denial. County planners cite abundant undeveloped Goleta Valley land and a general plan not allowing the proposed auto center as a matter of right without a conditional use permit.

Police report theft of welding equipment and supplies valued at 550 dollars from a Southern Pacific storage shed at 300 E Laurel Ave. In Lompoc a Sept 29 enchilada sale by Senior Girl Scout Troop 206 will offer 60 cent enchiladas with delivery available.

Tornadoes Strike Kansas and Plains States

United Press International reports severe tornadoes tore through 4800 square miles of Kansas and affected Nebraska and Oklahoma. One woman was killed and 111 injured with two more missing presumed dead. Clay Center suffered heavy damage as a tornado wrecked much of the central business district.

Willard Hughes Dies. Services Pending at McPeek Mortuary

Willard Hughes 74 died this morning at Lompoc District Hospital. He last lived at 321 W North Ave. Survivors include son Glenn Hughes of Washington. Further details will appear in the Record.
