Sinatra denies threats and reelection bid after Las Vegas incident

Frank Sinatra told United Press International he does not make threats and is not running for reelection. He dismissed mob remarks as comic strip humor after a Sept. 6 Caesars Palace altercation where Sandford Waterman drew a gun. Waterman was later charged and then freed, while Las Vegas officials said Sinatra could face questions upon return.

Southland Wins Higher Share of California Highway Funds

Governor Reagan signed a bill granting Southern California 60 percent of the $1 billion state highway fund, up from 55 percent, while Northern California’s share drops to 40 percent. The 13 southern counties had pressed the measure since 1947, aided by 1966 reapportionment that gave Los Angeles County greater Senate influence.

September rains improve western pasture conditions

Government officials report that September rains boosted pasture conditions after last month’s drought. A Weather Bureau update notes improvements across most states, especially the central Plains to the West, where range feed was only 75 percent of normal as of September 1, the lowest since 1950 aside from a 7 percent 1964 reading.

Weather Patterns Bring Warmth East and Cool Front West

Warm weather dominated the eastern half of the nation while a cool air mass followed heavy thundershowers advancing from the northwest. Southern winds nudged readings into the 80s in the South, with 60s near the Great Lakes. Storms drenched the West and Northern Plains as Fargo, North Dakota logged near three inches of rain, and temperatures fell to the 40s and 50s after the system moved through.

Premier Jacques Chaban-Delmas captures 63.5 percent of the vote in the National Assembly race to defeat reform candidate Jean Jacques Servan-Schreiber, who pledges to resign as Radical Socialist party secretary. Reagan backs restrictions on channel oil and gas leases

Gov. Ronald Reagan signed bills restricting new offshore drilling in the Santa Barbara Channel pending no seepage risk. The measures aim to protect beaches after a 1969 spill and require environmental impact reports for projects, plus a littering penalties upgrade and power plant siting study by state agencies.

Sweden Election Shrugs Off Communist Surge Keeps Socialists in Power

In Stockholm, Sweden’s general elections ended with the Social Democrats losing a small share but retaining a majority through Communist support. The Communists approached 5 percent while non socialist blocs led voting totals with 46.6 percent combined. Voter turnout reached 86.4 percent of 5.6 million eligible. Governor vetoes measles shot bill in California

In Sacramento California Governor Ronald Reagan vetoed a bill by Sen. Clair W. requiring all California children to have the measles vaccine before entering school. The action ends the measure for now and leaves school entry rules unchanged.

Former Klan leader forms militants

Calvin Craig, former grand dragon of the Georgia Ku Klux Klan, says he is forming a nationwide white Christian militant group. The organization aims to be the rightist counterpart to the Weathermen, promising secrecy and active operations while denying anti Black or anti Jewish aims. Charter members are expected to number about 50 at the opening meeting with chapters planned on the West Coast.
