Six indicted on narcotics charges in Santa Barbara jail

Grand Jury indicted six suspects including Allen Cain and his siblings for smuggling heroin into the Santa Barbara county jail and conspiracy. Four were arrested after a three hour jail riot and searches found narcotics paraphernalia. Additional heroin seized at Teresa Mendoza’s home.

Lompoc Fire Prevention Week programs announced

Lompoc Fire Chief John Baker unveiled a schedule of Fire Prevention Week activities for schools scouts and service clubs. Highlights include Operation Edith home exit drills on Oct 9 film shows Another Man's Family for clubs and seniors, plus Tin Pan Fire Drill and Know Your Fire Hazards for students. County jail riot quelled by sheriff detail

Santa Barbara County jail prisoners rioted on Wednesday smashing toilets furniture windows and a TV during a narcotics search by deputies. Nine hard core inmates were moved to solitary cells on the fifth floor as rest of the disturbance ended. The jail held 232 prisoners near capacity.

New pea soup record sparks national hunt for Stanford student

A nationwide search seeks Andy Hornby from Stanford University after 17 years, as Sam Johnson of Solvang, 17, breaks the split pea soup mark by eating 16 bowls in two and a half hours. The chain belt trophy rotates among record setters, while the restaurant serves about 1.4 million bowls yearly. Planners Deny Stable Permit Request at Lompoc Valley Site

The County Planning Commission denied Eleanor J. Robb on behalf of Mission Hills Stables of Lompoc Valley a conditional use permit for a public riding stable at 2900 Rucker Rd. Lompoc Valley. She may reapply once clearing operations remove inoperative vehicles and equipment as required by a prior county directive.
