Gusty winds and heavy rains sweep Texas from Felice

Tropical storm Felice lashed Texas with gusty winds over 30 mph at many spots and up to 46 mph at Fort Worth airfield while the South and Mississippi Valley endured showers and thundershowers. Elsewhere, heat and humidity rose with a string of 90s in the southeast and 60s to 70s across much of the nation.

Census shifts seats as 1970 census realigns California

An Assembly committee report says Southern California gains in representation while Northern California loses. Orange County could grow from three and a half to nearly six Assembly districts, Los Angeles loses seats to southern counties, San Francisco drops one district, and Santa Clara may gain almost a full congressional district. Scattered statewide gains account for a fifth seat. In Contra Costa County a $4 million suit alleges a stables negligence caused the racehorse Fabulous Fable to die from chronic laminitis after training between 1968 and 1969.

LAFCO to decide on El Capitan Ranch annexation

The Local Agency Formation Commission plans to withhold action Sept 24 on annexing 2,300 acres of El Capitan Ranch to Goleta County Water District. Staff requests continuance to Oct 8 after a message from County Planning Director Herbert H. Divelbiss who advised against the Planning Commission recommendation.

Annual police auction set in Lompoc parking lot sale

The Lompoc Police Department holds its annual auction of unclaimed items starting at 10 a.m. in the parking lot west of the police station. About 35 bicycles and over 30 other items will be sold to the highest bidders with cash or cashier's checks. Minors cannot bid, and all sales are final with no refunds.

Planners approve ten more farm preserves in Santa Maria area

The County Planning Commission on Wednesday approved 10 farm preserve applications in the Santa Maria Lompoc Cuyama and Tepusquet regions. Notable properties include the 4354 acre Spanish Ranch owned by John T Rickard judge and former Santa Barbara mayor and 131 acre parcel north of State Highway 166 west of Blosser Rd in Santa Maria.
