Bailey wins reversal on hearsay ruling in Medina trial

Defense attorney F. Lee Bailey clashed with military judge Col. Kenneth A. Howard over Capt. Robert Hicks testimony at the My Lai court martial. After a two hour conference, Howard reversed his hearsay ruling delaying Capt. Ernest L. Medina's testimony. The case centers on 102 murders alleged at My Lai.

Two more killed in N. Ireland fighting

Gunmen ambushed and killed a British soldier near Dungannon, the second trooper killed in 24 hours. A civilian who sighted a rifle at a Londonderry army post died after troops shot him. The IRA was blamed for the fresh attacks as violence in Northern Ireland rose to 104 deaths over two years.

Bomb blast hits Saigon nightclub during McGovern visit

A plastic bomb exploded inside the Tu Do nightclub in Saigon killing at least five and injuring about 20 as Sen. George McGovern stayed nearby. The attack followed anti American incidents including a church firebomb during his three day tour. US and South Vietnamese police secured the area while McGovern met President Thieu for 30 minutes with Ambassador Bunker present.

Sweetland to head Flower Festival 1972 Lompoc item

Earle E. Sweetland, retired Air Force colonel and former Vandenberg base commander, will chair the 1972 Lompoc Flower Festival. The Valley Chamber of Commerce named him at the regular meeting. Debra Beck, 17, succeeds Robin Densmore as Festival queen and will appear at Guadalupe’s Mexican Independence Day parade.

Governors kill Demo resolution at National Governors Conference

The National Governors Conference quickly rejected a Democrat sponsored resolution calling for changes in President Nixon's economic policy and also dismissed two anti busing resolutions with minimal discussion. Maryland Governor Mandel led the economic proposal as drafted, but Republican governors opposed.

FCI guard suspended in Los Angeles prisoner escape case

Warden Frank Kenton suspended guard William H. T. Edmonds Jr. after Edmonds was indicted for allegedly allowing prisoner Joseph Edward Schapiro to escape during a two day furlough to visit his sick father. Schapiro later faced multiple robbery and firearms charges. Edmonds, 22 months at FCI, may face up to five years and a $5,000 fine.

City planners launch ambitious program for growth goals

The Lompoc Valley planning initiative seeks broad input to guide city and county development. Nicholas Bevilacqua leads the effort with seven committees covering Land Use, Transportation, Natural Resources, Open Spaces, Parks and Recreation, Human Resources, Community Design, and Governmental Facilities. Fire danger remains extreme in California

State forestry officials warn hot weather and gusty north winds keep California in extreme fire danger near lumber and watershed areas. Deputy state Forester Howard Moore says several fires have appeared and that dangerous conditions will persist for the next two to three days at least.
