Giant sponge grows near radioactive waste dump off California
Oakland based report says a new genus of giant hexactinellid sponge three to four feet tall attached to sunken barrels thrives near the Farallon Islands about 30 miles west of San Francisco where 47 500 barrels of radioactive waste were dumped in 900 meter deep water. Oceanographer Robert S. Dyer notes plutonium levels remain far below health risk for inhalation yet the find sparks science fiction talk. He plans to present findings at a San Francisco hearing of the House Government Operations Committee.
