Boston White Pupil Boycott Successful in Desegregation Plan
In Boston nearly all white high school students boycotted classes under a court order to desegregate by busing 18 235 students. Only 3 percent of white students attended at South Boston and Roxbury, while black attendance reached about 34 percent with 64 of 2 074 whites present. Police kept the peace and no major violence occurred. 80 of 200 schools were affected citywide with higher attendance elsewhere.
