Alisal Ranch Environmental Plan Seeks 850 Units

An environmental impact report for the Alisal Ranch master plan proposes up to 850 cluster type residences on the Santa Ynez Valley site south of Solvang. The plan includes a General Plan and zoning change for 35 to 50 units per year over 20 years plus private recreation facilities. A public hearing is set for Sept 17 by the Environmental Quality Advisory Agency. The session also reviews a Howard Olsen Associates study on a Zaca Lake campsite project north of Los Olivos.

County orders mobile air monitoring lab to study Santa Ynez pollution

The county plans a $38,000 Beckman Instruments mobile unit to monitor ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and particulates in the Santa Ynez Valley. Start up hoped for January with testing across all four seasons, while a court suit seeks to pause a nearby $14 million Insignis development pending air tests. The State Board notes higher ozone exceedances this year. Also, a 27 minute color film about the Zuiderzee will be shown at Lompoc Library.

County considers $50 dog license to curb population

Health official Dr. Joseph Nardo told the Board of Supervisors the animal control division is running a deficit due to more loose dogs. He proposed a $50 license for unspayed dogs and floated free sterilization clinics as an alternative, arguing owners should be more responsible.

Highway 1 bypass project hangs on appellate ruling

Granite Construction faces daily losses of up to 4000 as environmentalists and officials await an appellate court decision on the Highway 1 bypass.
