Pioneer community gears up for 44th annual reunion in Lompoc
More than 500 people are expected for the Lompoc Pioneer Society 44th annual reunion and the sixth annual dinner of the Lompoc Valley Historical Society at the Grange Hall tonight. Saturday features a pioneer reminiscence, a picture album display, and open houses at Fabing-McKay-Spanne home and Lompoc Museum. The Old Fashioned Picnic and Annual Meeting are set Sunday at Ryan Park with Chumash artifacts on display.

Unemployment rate climbs to 5.1 percent in August

Platform Hazel blaze burns off after four hours
A fire on the offshore Platform Hazel in the Santa Barbara Channel burned itself out after about four hours. Twelve producing wells faced danger as five million cubic feet of gas fueled flames. A Santa Maria woman, Shirley L. Sebring, 30, died at Santa Maria Valley Community Hospital after a 1:35 p.m. crash on Highway 101 three quarters of a mile south of Santa Maria Way.
