Reagan weighs bill to grant retiree benefits to three lawmakers

Governor Reagan considers a Kenrick bill allowing special retirement for Assembly members Don Mulford Carl Britschgi and Robert Crown if defeated in November. Mulford would gain about 42300 in five years and Crown about 80000 with the lowered 14 year service rule while Britschgi receives far less. The measure passed the Assembly 71 to 0 and the Senate 35 to 0 before heading to Reagan.

Census Bureau faces task to locate 4.6 million people

Washington reports the Census Bureau aims to locate 4.6 million Americans to match its population estimates. Officials announced a preliminary national total of 200,263,721 after five months, with final figures due by December 1 near the April 1 clock estimate of 204,828,260. California surpassed New York as the most populous state, while New York City remained the largest city at about 7.77 million.
